Drain unblocking and repairs in Waltham Abbey

Drain unblocking, CCTV drain surveys, repairs and blocked sinks and toilets in Waltham Abbey, Upshire, Holyfield and Nazeing.

What is Waltham Abbey like?

Waltham Abbey takes its name from the ancient abbey church at its heart, and the old town around it has Georgian and Victorian houses, cottages and pubs. Later housing from the 1960s and 1970s lies on its edges. Beyond the town, Upshire, Holyfield and Nazeing mix village streets with farms, nurseries and open land, and Epping Forest begins a short distance away.

Why do trees matter for drains here?

The forest and the many mature gardens in these villages mean large trees stand close to a lot of houses. Roots go looking for moisture and find it at the joints in old clay pipes. A drain that has been slow for years may have roots growing inside it. A survey will show whether to cut them out or repair the pipe, and an engineer can advise on any protected trees before digging.

Are all homes connected to the mains?

Not necessarily. Homes in the more rural parts, and some former nursery sites and farm buildings, may rely on a septic tank or small treatment plant. A tank needs emptying and its own care, so it is a different job from unblocking a mains drain. Tell us about your arrangement at the start, and mention if you do not know.

What do the Lea Valley and its nurseries mean for drainage?

Land close to the valley can be low and damp, with a high water table after wet weather. A wet patch near a drain does not always mean a leak, but it is worth checking, especially if a smell comes with it. Businesses on former nursery land should say what they use the buildings for, since the drainage may have been altered for earlier uses.

Which company handles a shared drain?

A drain that serves only your home is yours up to the boundary. One shared with neighbours, or the lateral pipe past your boundary, has generally been the water company's job since October 2011. Waltham Abbey is in Essex, but its sewerage company is still Thames Water, so report shared drain or sewer faults to them.

What happens after I send an enquiry?

You fill in a single form. With your consent, we pass it to one local drainage engineer who covers your postcode, and to nobody else. If nobody does, we tell you and your details are not passed on. The engineer agrees the job and any cost with you directly, and it is free to ask.

Who you will hear from

We pass your enquiry to one local drainage engineer, if one covers your postcode. It is never sent to a list of companies. If nobody covers your postcode, we will tell you and will not pass your details on.
